The Marriage Transitions in Malawi (MTM) project is a longitudinal study that follows young women and men in central Malawi to investigate the social and economic influences on the timing of key life events in the lives young people, such as leaving school, having sex for the first time, and getting married. The study also aimed to identify whether and how socio-economic conditions and gender influence a person’s chances of acquiring HIV.

Economic Empowerment of Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Liberia - 2010

The Economic Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (EPAG) program provided young Liberian women with livelihood and life skills training to facilitate their transition to productive work. The program targeted young women (16-24 years) who possessed basic literacy and numeracy skills; who were not in school (although night school was okay); and who lived in one of nine target communities in and around Monrovia. The program consisted of six-months of classroom training followed by six-months of placement and support. The baseline survey aimed to benchmark the socioeconomic status of each study participant as a measure of comparison against the midline and endline survey data and to confirm that there are no, or few, statistically significant differences in observable characteristics between the treatment and control groups.

The Urban Life among Youth in Kisumu Project (ULYKP) aims to improve the quality and scope of data collected on sexual relationships and behavior among young people. The study employed a novel survey instrument called the Relationship History Calendar (RHC), which uses a life history calendar format to record detailed, 10-year retrospective information on sexual relationships, fertility, migration, schooling, work, and HIV testing histories. The quality of sexual behavior data captured by the RHC in half the sample is compared to that collected by a standard Sexual Partnership Questionnaire (SPQ), similar to the one used in Demographic and Health Surveys, in the other half of the sample. The study also created a matched partner data set by interviewing recent sexual partners of the respondents.
